The ROSE Testing Process for PCBs and Assemblies
ROSE testing begins with a bare circuit board or assembly, which will be the sample for a given test group. A solution of 75% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and 25% purified water or an extraction solvent in a known volume is measured for resistivity. Then, the sample is sprayed with or submerged into the solution. Ensure appropriate processing guidelines are followed for test duration, as some contaminants require a longer processing time to dissolve.
Once the solution has dissolved the salts and other ionic contaminants on the sample, the resistivity of the solution is measured again and reported in sodium chloride (NaCl) equivalent. The difference between initial and final resistivity tracks the amount of ions removed from the board. ROSE test results will indicate the soldering success of a board and whether it will perform reliably in operations.
